And why it’s usually about much more than a stage
When most people think about bikini competitions, they picture 25-year-old fitness influencers on Instagram.
Tiny waists. Perfect lighting. Endless selfies. Probably a reel with a spray tan, a posing suit, and some dramatic voiceover about “discipline.”
And for a lot of women over 40, the immediate reaction is:
“I could never do that.”
Too old.
Too busy.
Too out of shape.
Too intimidated.
Too late.
But after coaching thousands of women over the years through transformations, strength training, and competition prep at The Fitness Asylum, I can tell you something interesting:
The women who end up doing this are usually not the women you think.
Most are not arrogant.
Most are not narcissistic.
Most are not obsessed with themselves.
Honestly, it’s usually the opposite.
They are often:
- hard on themselves
- perfectionists
- overthinkers
- women who spent years putting everyone else first
- women rebuilding after divorce
- women navigating an empty nest
- women who lost confidence somewhere along the way
- women who know they are capable of more but are not exactly sure how to access that version of themselves again
And somewhere along the line, something shifts.
Maybe they see a transformation photo.
Maybe they see another woman on stage who looks relatable.
Maybe they see someone strong, lean, confident, powerful… and something clicks.
Not jealousy.
Recognition.
“Wait… maybe I want to feel like that.”
That’s usually where it starts.
“I’ll Take What She’s Having”
For me, bodybuilding and bikini competitions were never part of some grand master plan.
I was already in fitness. I taught classes. I was a personal trainer. The gym was already part of my life.
But the kind of strength training I eventually fell in love with was different.
I remember going back into a gym and seeing a woman with an incredible physique.
Great arms. Strong. Athletic. Lean.
And I literally interrupted her workout.
I was basically like:
“I really want those arms.”
She was training with a coach, and I immediately asked if he could train me. I didn’t know what it would cost. I didn’t care. I just knew I wanted whatever she had.
And I think that moment is actually incredibly human.
When you see something you want, you just want it.
Not necessarily because you want to become someone else.
But because something in you wakes up.
You start imagining:
- feeling stronger
- walking differently
- feeling confident in your own skin
- proving something to yourself
- becoming more disciplined
- seeing what you’re actually capable of
That’s powerful.
And that’s why before-and-after photos matter.
Not because women are shallow.
But because transformation is inspiring.
People see possibilities.
The Stage Was Never The Whole Point
I competed for the first time when I was 38 years old.
Which, interestingly enough, is very close to the age of many women who now come into our Bikini Transformation program.
And today?
We have women in their 40s, 50s, and even 60s stepping on stage.
One of our recent competitors was 65 years old.
She had been a member at The Fitness Asylum for years. People encouraged her forever:
“You should do it.”
“You’d be amazing.”
“You can absolutely do this.”
And eventually… she did.
That’s what I love about this process.
Because the stage itself is temporary.
The discipline isn’t.
The strength isn’t.
The confidence isn’t.
The identity shift isn’t.
That part stays.
And honestly, if someone truly falls in love with the process, they realize pretty quickly that this was never just about getting lean enough to wear a sparkly suit on stage.
It becomes about:
- showing up for yourself
- learning consistency
- building muscle
- developing resilience
- following through
- becoming mentally stronger
- creating standards for yourself
- realizing you can do hard things
The physique is part of it.
But it’s not the whole thing.
You Do NOT Need To “Look Like A Competitor” To Start
This is probably one of the biggest misconceptions women have.
They think they need:
- abs first
- confidence first
- experience first
- to already be “in shape”
- to already look like a competitor
No.
That’s literally why our transformation programs exist.
At The Fitness Asylum, our Transformation Team was built specifically for women who are not seasoned “competitors”.
Women who:
- already enjoy fitness
- want a bigger goal
- are tired of spinning their wheels
- want visible change
- are curious-ish about competition prep
- want structure and accountability
- want to see what they’re capable of
Some eventually compete multiple times.
Some never compete again.
Some never planned to compete in the first place but fell in love with the process.
And honestly, many women discover that what they truly needed was not “motivation.”
They needed direction.
A Good Coach Holds Belief For Their Clients
One thing I’ve learned after coaching women for years is this:
Most women do not start fully believing in themselves.
That’s normal.
Many second guess themselves constantly.
They wonder:
- “Am I ready?”
- “Can I actually do this?”
- “What if I fail?”
- “What if people judge me?”
- “What if I’m too old?”
- “What if I can’t stick with it?”
And part of being a good coach is recognizing that sometimes your client is borrowing belief from you before they fully have it themselves.
I can confidently tell someone:
“You’re doing fine. Keep going.”
Because I genuinely believe it.
I’ve watched women completely transform not only physically, but emotionally, mentally, and personally through this process.
And no, not because they became “perfect.”
But because they finally stopped sitting on the sidelines of their own life.
This Is Bigger Than A Competition
People sometimes assume bikini competitions are about vanity.
In my experience, they are often about growth.
About women deciding:
- to stop shrinking themselves
- to stop waiting
- to stop putting themselves last
- to stop believing they missed their chance
Strength training changes people.
Not just physically.
It changes how women carry themselves.
How they think.
What they tolerate.
What they believe they are capable of.
That’s why this matters.
And honestly?
That’s why so many women stay involved long after the show is over.
Because somewhere along the way, they realize:
this was never really about the stage.
It was about becoming someone they’re proud of.
