What Is Personal Training, Really? (And Is It Right For You?)

For a lot of people, the words “personal training” still bring up the same image:

A celebrity.

A private gym.

A trainer yelling while someone flips tractor tires for an hour.

Or maybe a professional athlete preparing for the Olympics.

I blame the 90s.

Back then, personal training felt like something reserved for famous people, wealthy people, or fitness fanatics.

But that’s not what personal training looks like today.

In fact, the vast majority of people who work with a personal trainer are just regular people trying to feel better, get stronger, lose weight, gain confidence, or figure out where to start.

And honestly?

That’s exactly why personal training exists.

The Gym Can Feel Intimidating

Even if you’ve worked out before.

Maybe especially if you’ve worked out before.

Because at some point, most people have had one of these thoughts:

“What if I can’t keep up?”

“What if everyone is in better shape than me?”

“What if I don’t know what I’m doing?”

“What if I make a fool of myself?”

At The Fitness Asylum, we’re not a giant big-box gym with 400 machines and rows of people wearing headphones pretending nobody else exists.

Most of our members participate in coach-led group fitness classes where every workout is planned for you and guided by a coach.

The good news?

You don’t have to figure out what workout to do.

You don’t have to create a program.

You don’t have to wander around wondering if you’re doing it right.

You simply show up.

But we also understand that for some people, jumping straight into a class still feels overwhelming.

That’s where personal training can be a fantastic starting point.

Personal Training Isn’t Just For Beginners

One of the biggest misconceptions about personal training is that it’s only for people who have never worked out before.

Not true.

Some people use personal training because they’re brand new.

Others use it because they have specific goals.

Others want accountability.

Others want to build strength faster.

Others want help after taking years away from exercise.

I’ve worked in fitness for decades.

I’ve had personal trainers.

I’ve been a personal trainer.

And yes, even personal trainers hire personal trainers.

Why?

Because having someone in your corner helps.

Having someone watch your form helps.

Having someone build a plan helps.

Having someone say, “Yep, you’re doing great. Keep going.” helps.

Confidence Is One Of The Biggest Benefits

Most people think the biggest benefit of personal training is the workout.

I disagree.

I think it’s confidence.

Because confidence doesn’t come from reading about exercise.

It comes from doing it.

It comes from learning how to squat.

How to deadlift.

How to use equipment.

How to modify exercises.

How to challenge yourself safely.

How to walk into a gym and feel like you belong there.

Once people build that confidence, everything changes.

Suddenly they stop worrying about whether they’re doing it wrong.

They stop feeling intimidated.

They stop feeling like fitness is for everyone else.

Why We Created The On-Ramp Program

At The Fitness Asylum, we wanted to create a starting point that felt approachable.

That’s why we created our On-Ramp Program.

Think of it as onboarding for your fitness journey.

The program includes:

  • Three private one-on-one personal training sessions
  • A nutrition review
  • A 90-day goal setting session
  • Individual coaching and guidance

The goal isn’t to crush you.

The goal isn’t to see how hard you can work.

The goal is to help you build confidence, learn movement patterns, understand your body, and create a plan.

Because saying “I want to get in shape” isn’t really a goal.

It’s a wish.

A goal has direction.

A goal has a plan.

A goal gives us something we can actually measure and revisit 90 days later.

What Happens After The On-Ramp?

Whatever you want.

Seriously.

There are no strings attached.

Some people continue with personal training.

Some transition into group fitness classes.

Some choose a hybrid membership that combines personal training and group fitness.

Some decide now isn’t the right time.

That’s completely okay too.

The On-Ramp is designed to help you make an informed decision about what comes next.

Personal Training Is About More Than Exercise

At its best, personal training isn’t really about workouts.

It’s about removing obstacles.

It’s about helping people stop second-guessing themselves.

It’s about building confidence.

It’s about creating momentum.

It’s about having someone guide you through the process so you don’t have to figure everything out alone.

Whether you’re returning to fitness after years away, looking to get stronger, wanting to lose weight, or simply trying to feel more comfortable in a gym environment, personal training can be an incredible place to start.

And if you’ve been waiting until you feel “ready,” here’s some good news:

Most people don’t feel ready.

They start anyway.

And that’s usually where the magic happens.
